Amazing victory by a seriously unde Blue Belt. That was one of the best uses of the guard I’ve seen in a while. It almost seems weird to say that Kevin stifled Roan with his guard, but he did.

He won on nearly every aspect of the fight…stand-up, the clinch and on the ground. It was inspirational.

P.S. Joe Rogan knows his stuff about BJJ. It’s nice hearing comments spoken intelligently about guard, BJJ belts, etc.

Thanks to those of you who have replied, I am a training partner of Kevin’s and I can tell you that it was a dream come true for him to fight in the UFC and the win was something he always knew he could do.
I won’t say that Kevin is your average Blue Belt, but he received his Blue Belt from Professor Caique (Carlos Enrique Elias) who is a sixth degree black belt under Helio Gracie. So we trust the professor’s judgement on what belt our guys deserve.

I’m sure he is a blue belt, but I imagine that after that victory, which was so much more than simply throwing up a lucky triangle, he’ll be considered for his purple (or should). He put up a superior technical effort all around.

    Grats to him.

Joe Rogan mentioned that Carneiro was a grappling competition champion which explains why he tried to posture up by putting both hands on the ground leaving his head wide open to the elbow that split open his melon. I really don’t get why guys train their ground game without using strikes while wearing head gear when they are trying to prepare for a MMA match, it developes really bad habits like that.

jkm: Roan got beat, and not by getting caught in a lucky triangle. Nothing he tried, save take-downs, worked effectively. Nearly every attempt he made to move from side to full mount failed.

Think what you want, but save the “ignorant” comments for yourself.
