Royce was totally un concentrated or hes becoming just old.. ive never seen royce fight such bad
Royce in his prime would have destroyed Hughes. The next match should be Lesnar vs. Royce.
Lesner vs Royce? Are you serious?
this video is bad i was waiting 4 royce gracie to get dominated and he sure did yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh
If Royce would have won it would have meant that MMA had not moved on at all since the early nineties.
In Royce’s time, fighters werent well rounded, you had two main groups consisting of strikers and grapplers with one group not being well versed in the others’ techniques.
Now MMA fighters are well rounded and Matt Hughes was a product of that. Royce could not compete in standup or against Hughes’ bullish strength.
It is not smite on the legend that is Royce Gracie but he is fighting out of his time, you wouldnt rave a classic ferrari against a Formula One car and expect it to win. But without one you cannot evolve to the other.
I’d like to see a 25 year old Royce fight Hughes. Be a different story.
roycve sucks hughes is te mso dominate cham, pions of ufc
This was a shame this fight happened. Royce was too old to return to fight Hughes. It would be great to have seen these 2 fight in their prime but this was a waste of time. Royce was great in his era. No rules UFC where you could wear your Gi etc.
RIP Helio Gracie
anonimo
im think should be a nice combat, i need more time to think and never say goodbye
this fight is to poor. y aca hay gato enjaulado
eu sou fã do royce e faixa preta de jiu jitsu mas o matt nesta luta foi o cara!!!!!!!!!
Let’s face it everyone BJJ has been figured out. It’s not as dominate without the gi. They needed to change the rules (old UFC and Pride) to get an advantage. Current rules with both men in their mid 20’s would be awesome. After all dreaming is free!
What?! Royce in his “prime” would have still been OWNED by present-day Hughes! I can’t believe people believe otherwise. Hughes vs. “prime” Royce is broken down like this:
- Hughes MUCHHH stronger
- Hughes better cardio
- Hughes better striking
- Hughes has submitted some AMAZING BJJ artists. His ground game is certainly among the best
- Hughes is a MUCH better wrestler
The only advantage that R. Gracie has is his world-renown BJJ, but Hughes has too many things, that in conjunction, would negate Royce’s advantage.
Again, this is pitting “prime” Royce (back in his 20’s/early 30’s) against present-day Hughes. No contest….
Times have changed and Gracies dominance was significant because nobody else was training/effective in other disciplines.
Thank you Andrew. atleast theres someone who knows something about MMA
I love watching Royce get his ass beat. His early UFC fights were long and boring. There are numerous guys these days that can stomp Gracie in his prime.
royce gracie is 1 of the best fighters that has ever been in mma but he was way to old and past it 2 to fight huges when he did
Royce gracie was a dominant force back in the old days of UFC and in the PRIDE and K-1 leagues. He was dominant because he was so different, BJJ was almost unknown back then and Royce certainly was a master of it. Royce back then is somewhat like Lyoto Machida and Karo Parisyan, who use a judo and Shotokan karate influenced way of fighting. They are different now, and therefore successful, just like Royce was. i agree with paul, it is a good thing that Matt beat Royce, because it shows the massive progress made by this sport. even the greatest lose sometimes, and im sure that the gracie family must be proud of what has happened to the sport that they did so much for.
gracie is fourty something.. this is like me fighting my terminally ill father.
wow you guys gracie is a legend.
how would you expect matt hughes to find big ass fighters royce faced in the past?
if gracie was in his prime it would be a different game.
fight*
k first of all andrew.
- Hughes MUCHHH stronger
- Hughes better cardio
- Hughes better striking
- Hughes has submitted some AMAZING BJJ artists. His ground game is certainly among the best
- Hughes is a MUCH better wrestler
hughes is stronger? yes he is. but its not whos stronger that wins the fight its whos smarter. thats why royce always won. was royce stronger then dan severn? no of course not. he was smarter thats why he won. Matt hughes has better cardio? how could u figure that out? was there a running competition against the 2 or what. and of course hughes has better striking thats the type of fighter he is. theres a big difference buddy. royce in his prime would absolutley destroy matt hughes and he knows it. and by destroying matt hughes i dont mean busting up his face with punches. i mean making matt hughes tap out. thats what royce does
have a good day.
To Royce’s credit Matt Hughes pretty much just uses Gracie school BJJ in every stage of this fight (other than the punching at the very end but that was still set up with Gracie BJJ)
You guys are all a bunch of girls UFC is Wack MMA is Wack and Matt Hughes is Trailer Trash and Gracie would have killed him in his prime anyways. Plus that was an early Stoppage and a boring un athletic and un Coordinated fight like all UFC white trash bum fights. They look so goofy out there WAR BOXING UFC IS WACK AS HELL.
Oh and sweet fly in the air throw a right hand that Hughes did backing up gracie into the cage that was so cool. Where did he learn that one? Wow how do you guys watch that crap I get the same excitement watching after school fights at the park. These UFC guys are so weak and have no athleticism at all its sad that are young society has turn to watching this crap and getting all crazy and spilling beer everywhere cheering these fights GROW UP. Watch Boxing that’s where all the real athletes are.
John James you obviously don’t know much about Mixed Martial Arts. You don’t understand the skill required to fight an intricate ground game. You just don’t understand the sport. It’s not just a “school fight at the park”. They are incredibly strong and athletic. It’s much more of a strategy and thinking game than is boxing. Depending on your oponent and their martial arts background, there are several ways you may choose to fight. On the ground is where the real thinking comes in to play.
Now, about Hughes and Gracie. Gracie was a legend of his time. But MMA has progressed past that. Hardly anybody knew of JiuJitsu when Gracie was good. Nobody trained to fight against that. Now-a-days, EVERYBODY trains in JiuJitsu. Anything Gracie does is not a suprise these days as it was back when he was good. He is a legend because he brought that style to the mainstream and now everybody uses it. But today’s fighters are more athletic and more well rounded than they were back then. So yes, Matt Hughes in his prime could beat Gracie in his prime. But it’s two different time periods. It’s like Babe Ruth. Was Babe Ruth an amazing baseball player? Of course! But how would he do if he were to play today? Terrible! Pitchers today are so much more advanced than they were back then. Players today are so much more athletic and strong. Babe Ruth could not play today. And at the same time, put a player like Barry Bonds or Albert Pujols in Babe Ruth’s era, and they would absoluetly DOMINATE. Because they are so much more advanced. Put Matt Hughes in Gracie’s era and he would dominate just as much if not more than Gracie. Nothing against Gracie, because he is a LEGEND.. but times have changed and the sport has evolved. And that is a good thing.
John James… Are you for real? The best fighters in the world are fighting in the UFC! I’ve been watching since UFC 1 & if you remember correctly your so called boxers got their asses handed to them. MMA fighters normally have more than one fighting style where as a boxer only uses his fist which makes mma fighters more well rounded fighters than boxers! Anyways, we all know that Gracie in his prime would have finished Hughes early in the first round by submission! Gracie isn’t the same fighter he once was! Sure he still knows what hes doing but his body just cant keep up with his mind… Hes old school now!
Look.. Gracie is as good as he ever was… but times change… everyone who ACTUALLY watches UFC or any MMA. is right and knows full well that if this was gracie in his prime the out come would have been a hell of a lot different…atleast in my opinion.. dont get me wrong Hughes is A phenom he finishes matches… look at his first fight with GSP… But look at Gracie’s past he took out Akebono, or his most talked about fight with Kimo, He’s a legend no doubt, But the way he finished fights then compare to now… i think very few people have he style, He transitions were fluid, He submissions Were explosive, and if you weren’t thinking you were going to be Tapping… Waaaaaaaaaaaay out weight class…In the 90’s it wasn’t really MMA as much as it was BAre Knuckle brawling… dont get me wrong its all classic but it has just changed by leaps and bounds that Boxing is going to slowly lose it’s cred when compared to any MMA… not just UFC… but WEC, K-1, all of them Boxing had its time… Everyone Who Watches MMA, everyone who hears Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Is instantaneously reminded of Gracie…. But Hughes is a New Era of fighter… and honestly the new breed will eventually surpass the old… i just dont want to take away from the greats .. but if you put them in the ring with the likes oF hughes, GSP, Anderson silva, Lyoto, BJ, I think the out come would be the same as this
Royce beat people when people didn’t know the power of BJJ. Even helios gracie stated in his book about submission royce beat everybody because they didnt understand Jiu Jitsu. Now guys like Matt Hughes trained in various styles and could beat Royce using anyone of them. Whereas royce was BJJ all the way. I am not dissing royce i have the highest respect for him and I do think he would have beaten matt hughes if he had MMA experience not just using BJJ. Royce is still the greatest UFC Champion because he was the one who should technique beats power. Hughest is a great new era fighter but only because he learned from the lessons that royce gave in the early UFC
Having rolled with Royce several times, the frail looking guy has deceptively strong legs that along with his size 13 feet uses effortlessly to squeeze your diaphragm much like I imagine would an anaconda. Can’t breath, you lose interest in continuing to fight. That is pretty much the essence of jujitsu fight strategy. Save time and money folks as all the fancy moves only work when an opponent is in oxygen debt or just plain spent. What puzzles me is why people continue to spend thousands on overpriced lessons when you can get great training for free during high school/college? Cops, military and even special forces guys that I’ve seen juiced up with delusions of grandeur after two week workshops, others training 3 hours/week, gals doing the several week rape class expecting to come out with useful fighting skills were quietly mocked by those of us in the know. There is no getting around 100’s if not thousands of hours of mat time people. Be real. GJJ is not a magic bullet, yet reading some of the comments, it’s like some of you are under some kind of hypnotic spell. I would have enjoyed seeing Royce fight Tank instead of a conditioned athlete like Hughes. So why aren’t the sons fighting in the UFC rather than just huckstering..expanding the cult following?
Royce Gracie, the biggest looser of ALL TIME. You can see all of the MMA fight in National and International TV or internet with the exception of the three loses of Royce Gracie. Can someone explain?
I am a huge fan of Royce. He’s a legend. But for the most part I agree with paul and andrew. MMA today is a product of what Royce once was. Most MMA fighters today wanted to get into MMA when they saw Royce in UFC 1.
And I don’t think this fight was a bad decision for Royce either, after all, he got paid over 1 mil for this fight. ($ 400,000.00 just to show up)
Old, Or young, Bottom line, Royce stepped in the ring because he thought he could fight, we all know he did’nt do it for the money, thats just not gracie like. But I agree, Royce in his prime fighting Hughes in his prime, would hae been an awesome fight.
mma is not real martial arts, just trailer trash americans who think they can fight.
All u idiots who say mma isnt real martial arts a about as sharp as a bowling ball. Come on seriously? U give me one boxer, ONE that could step up and fight someone from mma in an actual fight. Get owned 9/10 times is what they would do. Move on like everyone else, boxing is boring and old and being replaced by actual fighting. Do yourselves a favor and stop leaving comments cause u look f*ckin retarded
