MMA Wagering And Betting Basics
Mixed-martial arts has gripped the attention of spectators and gamblers. The fights start ferociously with thousands of wagers placed on each fighter. Some people place huge bets on each fight, enjoying the big payoffs when their fighters win. Others just want to get their feet wet. They want to taste the excitement of having a few dollars on the line.
MMA wagering is quick, simple and fun. Each time your fighters win, you’ll find yourself rushing to place another small bet. If you’ve never placed a bet on a MMA match before, now’s the time to learn. We’ll take you through it step-by-step (it’s easier than you think).
Here’s How It Works
The most common phrase you’ll hear in MMA betting is “the line.” It’s very simple. The line is the straight bet on the winner. To make it easy, it’s given to you upfront. Take a look at this example (from UFC 83: Serra Vs. St. Pierre)…
————————————————-
Georges St. Pierre – 500
Matt Serra + 350
————————————————-
See those 2 numbers above? Every fight has a negative number and a positive number. The fighter with a positive number (in this case, Matt Serra) is the underdog. Negative and positive numbers work differently, but they’re easy to remember. Here’s how they work…
The negative number reflects how much money you need to bet on that fighter to win $100.
The positive number reflects how much money you’d win if you bet $100 on that fighter.
Keep in mind that you don’t need to bet $100. You can bet $5 on a fight. The numbers above simply represent a ratio. Whether you bet $1, $100, or $10,000, it’s the same ratio.
MMA Betting Example
Let’s use the UFC 83 fight as an example. Assume you want to bet on St. Pierre. Remember how negative numbers work? You’ll need to bet $500 to win $100 (you’ll receive a total $600 back if St. Pierre wins). Easy, right?
Now, assume you want to bet on Serra. Remember how positive numbers work? If you bet $100 and Serra wins, you’ll win $350 (you’ll receive a total $450 back). Very simple.
Here’s a quick test on ratios for you: How much would you need to bet on St. Pierre to win $300? If you answered $1,500, you know your ratios.
I’d wager you didn’t realize how simple MMA betting is.
